Tonight I went to Whelan's Pub and it was amazing!
Whelan's is known for being a popular music venue in Dublin. A pub of some sort has always existed on the property since 1772, when it was named Kevin's Port. It wasn't until 1989 that the popular music reputation was really born.
During the time that Whelan's was being built, it was popular to create these "super pubs" that were very flashy. Whelan's went for the more traditional feeling and it is a good thing that they did!
Even from outside, one can get the traditional feeling. The entrance of the pub looks very worn and very loved. From this one can tell that it is a very popular spot.
Inside continues with the traditional feeling. This can seen seen from the wooden floors, wooden tables and chairs, as well as the wooden walls. When it gets dark outside, the pub turns into a cozy, warm escape from the night.
Though there were places to sit, the majority of the pub was standing room. This made it easy to talk to others and to move around. There was the bar area and that was divided from a bigger room with more sitting.
Even though I went on a Monday night, there was still a good amount of people there. The Irish are always down for a good time!
Though Whelan's is known for live music, tonight there was no live bands. But that did not stop the party. The DJ was amazing! Now, I am all for good dance music, but nothing beats some good classic rock and that is exactly what the DJ brought! He played AC/DC and Scorpions! I was loving the music! It seemed that no one else was really into the music or even knew the bands that were playing! People kept asking me how old I was since I knew all the songs.
I even requested the Arctic Monkeys and the DJ was more than willing to listen to my request. It turns out that the Arctic Monkeys have even played at the pub!
All in all, the experience was great. I would highly recommend Whelan's to anyone in Dublin looking for a good pub to go to. It is in the city center, so it is really easy to get to. It is a great pub just to sit down and enjoy a good pint. Or if you wish to have a little more excitement, go to a live concert there!
